Gender How can we understand gender? Gender is socially constructed. The social constructions both include and exclude. Gender involves a set of culturally- and socially-specific meanings. It consists of the ideas we have bout masculinity and femininity and how we apply these notions to people, practices, power, careers and more. Read more


The term ‘intercultural’ acknowledges the complexity of locations, identities, and modes of expression in a global world, and the desire to raise awareness, foster intercultural dialogue and facilitate understanding across and between cultures. ‘Interculturality’ implies that artistic practice resides both in a location – whether geographical, spatial, or corporeal – and also within an in-between space – among and within individuals, milieux, social constructs, and cultures. Practice refers to conceptual processes as well as to processes of making and becoming. To embrace the idea of arts practice as intercultural, we might conceive of arts practice as the making of social constructs such as gender, race, class, religion, ability, age, nationality, even as these social constructs are challenged, opened, and made anew through practice and performance.


Interdisciplinarity involves the combining of two or more academic disciplines into one activity (e.g., a research project). It is about creating something new by crossing boundaries, and thinking across them. It is related to an interdiscipline or an interdisciplinary field, which is an organizational unit that crosses traditional boundaries between academic disciplines or schools of thought, as new needs and professions emerge.The term interdisciplinary is applied within education and training pedagogies to describe studies that use methods and insights of several established disciplines or traditional fields of study. Interdisciplinarity involves researchers, students, and teachers in the goals of connecting and integrating several academic schools of thought, professions, or technologies—along with their specific perspectives—in the pursuit of a common task.


Transdisciplinarity connotes a research strategy that crosses many disciplinary boundaries to create a holistic approach. It applies to research efforts focused on problems that cross the boundaries of two or more disciplines, such as research on effective information systems for biomedical research (see bioinformatics), and can refer to concepts or methods that were originally developed by one discipline, but are now used by several others, such as ethnography, a field research method originally developed in anthropology but now widely used by other disciplines.
